Basic Commands

The Great Dane dog breed is truly one of the most magnificent animals you will ever come across.  Training these dogs is not a responsibility to be taken lightly, they’re rapid growth makes small problems become huge issues in a short amount of time.  These dogs are not a perfect match for everybody but for the right people they are ideal pets.

Great Dane Dogs

At maturity these dogs will weigh in anywhere from 110-175 pounds.  They will reach a height of 31-36 inches.

At 8 weeks of age the pups are around 25lbs, by 11 weeks case studies have grown up to 40 lbs.

Great Dane puppies resemble an average medium size dog.  They will bond with their main caregiver(s) and the dog’s loyal demeanor will guarantee a friend for life.  If socialized properly there will be no problems with other animals or people.

These guys are ideal human companions for active families or singles who are strong enough to properly train the dog.

Don’t get the wrong idea, you will not have to wrestle your dog to get him to do what you want but Danes aren’t aware of their own strength.  You will have best results if you treat them as delicately as possible but don’t let them ‘rule the roost’.  Great Danes are sensitive so if you as the owner/trainer are aggressive the fight or flight instinct will kick in. They do not respond well to harsh treatment.

Basic commands can be taught with relative ease with persistence and patience

Come

The recall command is important for the safety of the dog and general acceptance.  Great Danes are very social and curious, people tend to freak out when they see a big silly dog  running at them.

Sit

An important ‘trick’ to teach your Great Dane; kids and other animals are less intimidated when the huge dog is sitting.  Some other dogs will want to fight a Great Dane because they have a case of small man syndrome, they want to beat up the big guys to make themselves look good.

Down

Down can be the canine equivalent to relax.  If you request “down” from your dog, make sure he does it.  Don’t overuse the word.

Up

This command will teach your dog when it is acceptable to jump.

Stay or Wait

These words  can save your dogs life if you see a danger he may have overlooked.
